He carried it at first,
a heavy load.
Was later nailed to it,
with pain untold.
Then last, he entered it,
became it,
gave exchange for it,
-his very soul.
The Cross was timber yes,
but more than that:
The Cross was sin, my sin,
my dis-obeying:
the Creature walks away from his Creator,
proud, a god by now
or so he thinks.
He left his home and Father,
spent his all
and then
was hungry still;-
his soul, his cut-off soul
now turned for home.
But before then a son, another Son
had entered into sin, became it,
took it all upon his very soul
was crushed by its abandonment.
Lost and Lost and Lost from God
was what he carried then.

appalling pain and clash
and utter bitterness.
He came to where I am, nailed to my Sin,
he carried, then was nailed to it,
became it all
for me,
that I could then,-what grace! – be ‘nailed’ to Him, and free.
